Dwelling in Strength: A Devotional Journey Through Psalm 18

Christian Devotional - Psalm 18 Devotional from the Midweek Prayer Pause

This month, we lingered in Psalm 18.
Not rushing past the metaphors, but letting them settle.
Not skimming the surface of strength and refuge, but stepping inside and dwelling in them.

The psalmist doesn’t just describe God - he declares Him:

“My strength. My rock. My fortress. My deliverer. My shield. My stronghold.”

Each word is a doorway into deeper trust.
Each image, an invitation to abide.

“I love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer…” Psalm 18:1–2

✨ Strong Indeed

Strength falters.
It peaks and troughs, rises and falls.
So often, our strength depends on our circumstances—how rested we feel, how heavy the day is, how much we’re carrying.
But God’s strength is unfailing. Unchanging. Freely given.

Charles Spurgeon reminds:

“The Lord is my strength. If He gives me strength, it is all I need; if He is my strength, I am strong indeed.”

We pour out our love to Him, and He renews our strength.
We rest in a love that was spoken over us before we could respond.
Already chosen. Already held.
Not earned. Not fragile. Just freely given. And strong indeed.

✨ Held in the Fortress

Peace leaks.
It slips through our fingers like water from a bucket riddled with holes.
We grasp, we strive, we try to hold it together—but it spills out.

Christ is our rock and our refuge.
John Newton writes:

“Our peace is not in ourselves, but in Christ our rock and refuge.”

When Christ is our fortress, He is not just a place we run to for protection—He is the place we rest.
We don’t just hide from the world in the safety of His arms.
We dwell. We abide. We stay.
Welcomed by our loving Father as honoured guests.
Not just safe—but home.

✨ Christ, Our Refuge

Storms don’t always roar.
Sometimes they whisper doubt.
They linger quietly, wearing us down over time - like waves smoothing a shard of sea glass on the shore.

Sea glass begins as something broken.
Rough edges & Sharp lines.
But as it’s tumbled by the waves and pressed into the sand, it’s slowly transformed.
The jaggedness fades & the edges soften. It becomes something new, something beautiful. A jewel.

We’re like those little pieces of sea glass.
God uses the storms of life to shape us, to smooth our rough edges, to transform us into something He can use.
But unlike sea glass, we’re not left to tumble alone.

Jesus offers us a safe haven.

Tim Keller reminds:

“Jesus is the true and better refuge. When storms come, He doesn’t just protect - you are safe because He is unshakable.”

Even as we’re being shaped, even as we’re being made new - He holds us steady in the waves.

✨ My Shield

God’s shield surrounds us.
Not just against harm, but against despair, fear, and weariness.
This shield speaks of divine defence.
Of God’s surrounding presence.
Of faithful safeguarding.

Corrie ten Boom assures:

“There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.”

Even in the darkest places, His shield holds firm.
His love reaches deeper than the despair, and His peace holds firmer than the storm.
We’re not just defended - we’re invited to rest.

✨ My Stronghold

Did you ever build a den or a fort as a child?
Sofa cushions, cardboard boxes, and your mother’s tablecloths held together with Sellotape and clothes pegs - an impregnable fortress against imaginary foes.
Inside, surrounded by soft toys and dim light, you felt safe & secure.

As we grow up, we tend to forget about cardboard forts.
Instead, we build walls around ourselves - closing off emotions, burying ourselves in work, escaping through endless scrolling.
It’s still a fort - but not a very good one.
The walls are flimsy. They don’t hold up to much at all.

God offers us a different kind of stronghold.
This den isn’t made of cardboard and linen.
Its walls are built by His love, mercy, and grace - resting on the strongest cornerstone of Christ.

His stronghold isn’t just a hiding place.
It’s a place to dwell.
To rest.
To be held.
A shelter from the storm.
A refuge from our enemies.
A home for our hearts.

We’re not just invited to run there in crisis.
We’re invited to stay.
To make His presence our home.

📝 Prayer Journaling Prompts from Our Psalm 18 Devotional

  • Where have I been relying on my own strength lately?
  • What does it look like to let God be my strength today?
  • What storms have been quietly wearing me down?
  • What flimsy forts have I built that don’t truly hold?
  • How can I make God’s presence my dwelling place - not just my emergency shelter?
  • What would change if I truly believed He is unshakable?

🙏 Closing Prayer

Lord,
You are my strength when mine is fading.
You are my fortress when the winds rise.
You are my refuge when the storms whisper doubt.
You are my shield when I feel exposed.
You are my stronghold - not made of cardboard or cushions, but built by mercy and held by grace.

Teach me to dwell, not just visit.
To rest, not just run.
To be held, not just helped.

Let Your presence be my home.
Let Your love be my shelter.
Let Your strength be my steadiness.
Amen.
